Description
The context Nearly 300 tigers are held on farms across Vietnam. Authorities want to confiscate tigers from some facilities and some owners want to surrender them — but the two government rescue centres able to receive tigers are full. As a direct result, tigers that could be removed are stuck on farms because there's nowhere for them to go. This is happening now. The Vietnamese government has identified dedicated sanctuary capacity as essential to phasing out tiger farming. The Tiger Sanctuary Vietnam is being created to provide that missing capacity: a high-welfare sanctuary offering specialist lifelong care, giving authorities a safe place to relocate tigers and making confiscations and surrenders possible. It's not just refuge for individual animals — it's the infrastructure needed to close Vietnam's tiger farms. It's early days, but not vague-early. We have strong support from the relevant Vietnamese authorities, an emerging international technical advisory team, and a UK charity registration underway. Phase 1 will provide lifelong care for roughly 10–20 tigers. Where we are now We're not yet a registered charity or ready to approach major donors, and we don't yet have a completed strategic plan or construction budget. But we already need to communicate clearly with prospective trustees, government stakeholders, technical advisers, grantmakers and journalists. We want to use this foundational period to get the messaging right — not to make the project look further along than it is. What we need help with Working directly with our Founder and CEO, alongside the strategic-planning process, to: Develop a compelling organisational narrative Articulate the sanctuary's role in enabling confiscations, surrenders and the phase-out of tiger farming Convey both urgency and credibility, and tailor messages to different audiences Distinguish what's known from what's still developing, and flag claims needing stronger evidence Anticipate the hard questions supporters, partners and journalists will ask Gradually build this into an initial case for support Likely deliverables (Phase 1) A core narrative and messaging framework, short/medium/long descriptions of the organisation, evidence-backed key messages, website and media boilerplate, and an FAQ (including sceptical questions). As the strategy firms up, a later phase would develop the initial case for support itself. We're not looking for graphic design — the priority is getting the thinking and the words right. Who this suits Someone with experience in nonprofit cases for support, strategic communications, or major-donor/institutional fundraising — who can find the simple, compelling story inside complicated information, knows the difference between persuasive messaging and inflated claims, and is comfortable challenging unclear thinking. Experience in animal protection, conservation or the Global South is useful but not essential. Genuine alignment with animal protection matters. :-) Time commitment Substantive work begins October 2026 — no expectation to start before then, though we're happy to share background and have an early conversation. From October, roughly 3–5 hours/week for an initial 8–12 weeks, with possible continuation. Remote; some overlap with UTC+7 helpful but we're flexible. Who you'd work with Heidi Quine, Founder and CEO. Heidi is an Australian animal-welfare leader based in Asia since 2011, with 13+ years at Animals Asia leading farmed-animal rescue programmes and specialist sanctuary operations in Vietnam, and extensive experience working with the Vietnamese government, international donors and technical specialists. A chance to shape how a significant new animal-protection initiative explains itself — before its messaging becomes fixed. https://thetigersanctuary.org/Skills requested
