Description

Urban Wildlife Alliance is launching New York City’s first comprehensive Wildlife Emergency Response Program. As part of this initiative, we are developing a website-based AI assistant that can help members of the public navigate wildlife emergencies and human–wildlife conflict situations. The assistant will provide clear, humane, step-by-step guidance in common scenarios (such as injured wildlife or conflict situations), help users determine appropriate next steps, and connect them to our Wildlife Helpline when needed. The goal is to reduce pressure on our volunteer response team while ensuring that people receive accurate and compassionate information during stressful situations. We have a dedicated intern who will work on developing the assistant. We are seeking an experienced volunteer mentor who can provide guidance on AI assistant design, conversational flow, and responsible implementation. We are especially interested in building a system that is clear, safe, and easy for the public to use. This is a mentorship role rather than a full build, and we are looking for someone who is excited to support a mission-driven nonprofit using technology for animal welfare and humane coexistence.

Skills requested

  • Experience with AI assistants or chatbots
  • Basic understanding of conversational design
  • Interest in using technology for social impact
  • Ability to provide guidance and mentorship to a nonprofit team

Our mission

Urban Wildlife Alliance is a New York City–based, all-volunteer nonprofit dedicated to safeguarding the welfare of wild animals in urban environments through compassionate conservation. We work to reduce wildlife suffering, promote humane coexistence between people and wildlife, and advocate for policies and practices that recognize wild animals as sentient individuals deserving of respect and protection. We are currently launching NYC’s first comprehensive Wildlife Emergency Response Program, which provides emergency guidance, connects the public with licensed wildlife rehabilitators, and deploys trained rescue teams when needed. As part of this effort, we are developing an AI-powered assistant to help triage wildlife emergencies and human–wildlife conflict situations, provide accurate and humane guidance, and reduce pressure on our volunteer helpline team.
