Volunteer Social Media Content Creator — Insect Welfare Research Society (IWRS) The IWRS is a global, academic-led research society founded in 2023 and dedicated to advancing evidence-based scholarship on invertebrate welfare. The Society supports the growth and connectivity of that research community through its listserv, membership database, events, research guidelines, reference library, and grant programs. The Society seeks a Volunteer Social Media Content Creator to build its audience among researchers, graduate students, and academic staff in entomology, animal behavior, animal welfare science, and adjacent fields. The goal is field-building rather than general-audience engagement: establishing IWRS as a primary reference point for invertebrate welfare research and for welfare-oriented research practices and guidelines, and growing Society membership among scholars. The role covers planning, drafting, and scheduling content across Bluesky, LinkedIn, and YouTube; monitoring newly published literature and identifying work suitable for promotion; promoting the seminar series, student research awards, and small meeting support grants; and conducting targeted outreach to academic listservs, departmental mailing lists, learned societies, and conference organizers in support of awards cycles and membership recruitment. We are looking for someone who can read primary scientific literature and describe findings accurately, including appropriate hedging of preliminary results, and who writes in plain, measured prose without hyperbole or engagement-driven framing. Precision is the central requirement: terminology, author and institutional names, study descriptions, citations, and links must be correct in every particular, since errors carry reputational cost with an expert audience. Academic training in entomology, biology, or animal welfare science, and prior science communication work for a research institution or learned society, are preferred.

Our mission

Insects are one of the most numerous and diverse animal groups on Earth. Still, we understand very little about how to measure their welfare. Insects are managed in many contexts that may present welfare concerns: as ‘mini-livestock’ farmed for food and feed, in waste management, as agricultural pests or invasive species, in research and educational settings, for medical purposes, as targets of conservation actions, and more. Scientific research is urgently needed to understand how to factor the welfare needs of individual insects into policy and practice. The Insect Welfare Research Society is an academic-led research society founded in March 2023. The society aims to support: 1) The global insect welfare research community 2) The incorporation of evidence-based information on insect welfare into policy and practice by relevant stakeholders We also support welfare research on both terrestrial invertebrates (e.g., spiders and other arachnids, myriapods like millipedes, gastropod molluscs, etc.) and aquatic invertebrates (e.g., shrimp/prawns, horseshoe crabs, cephalopod molluscs, etc.).
